Summer Sketching part 3

I just found my huge watercolor moleskine, and while I didn't actually paint anything yet (I know, shame on me) I did sketch some stuff. Here we go!

I was surprised to find this sketch already in here.


It was pretty hard trying not to get caught by these people.



I was listening to the Decemberists, and I really love their storytelling in their music. I fell in love with the song about the Shankill Butchers, and also When the War Came, both off the album 'The Crane Wife'. I may do a piece about the Crane Wife itself, really interesting folk tale. I did a little Mariner's Revenge sketch too, great song by them.


This guy is from an upcoming story about a demon youth who gets trapped on earth due to his older brother (pictured above) stripping him of his ability to travel back and forth between dimensions. I've been trying to figure out a look to him that's almost ethereal. I'm not quite there yet....

Summmmmmer sketching part 2

While cleaning my room this morning, I came across my concept book from Concept Design in Sequential Art. The thing is absolutely filled with tons of world, character, and creature sketches, and it's just waay too much to post here. I'm thinking about making a whole separate blog strictly for concept design for my 8 stories that I have swirling around in my head. I think it would be a good place to keep track of everything and get some feedback on my design and development.

Anywho, here's part two of the summer sketch dump:

Summer Sketching

Hello all! One night I went to bed at 11, woke up at 2AM and decided to stay up and draw myself insane until 5:30 AM. Here are some of the results of that night.

My little pear fairy character, Nashi Pear is always tons of fun to draw. A little girl tried to convince me that she needs a nose and didn't like my explanation that I created her without a nose. She tried to ask her mom if fairies have noses (of course she said yes), and then I proceeded to ask her if Patrick (from Spongebob) had a nose. That pretty much ended it there. Yay for winning arguments against five-year-olds!



The two previous sketches are because of Drew Soman and we'll leave it at that.

Creature Stampede

I just scanned a ton of sketches I've done over the summer, but I'm not gonna overwhelm this post with everything. Instead, I'm posting sketches from Spring quarter, sketches that eventually lead up to this creature. I had a TON of fun with these little monsters and their little personalities, and I realized creature design was something I was all about. I always have been drawing animals and dinosaurs when I was little; I guess it just makes sense.




I'm wondering if I can make something out of this. I might do a little book series of these guys getting stuck with a bunch of children somewhere.

Creepo sketch

My mom got super-freaked out about this, so I posted it here for your viewing pleasure.

It was really just an image that popped into my head of a woman trapped in a door as the door knocker. She was being punished in the same manner of many Greek gods, most likely for going into some forbidden/sacred land or castle.

My mom thought I was conjuring spirits and told me not to open those kinds of doors.

It is, however, ironic that today just so happened to be Friday the 13th (even though on here the time is 3 hours behind...)

Just got home back to JER Z and kinda miserable. Anyway, here is some art for you because I kind of lost my will to live and pretty much everything else

Final proj from Seqa Art....IT TOOK FOREVER

We had to make a 4 page long comic from a professional script instead of doing our last sketchbook assignments, and I proceeded to freak out, as I have never done any pages before EVER (Original script here...first 6 actual pages here [Lienel Yu owned me so hard])

Opening city panel, my word, did it take long. This was my first time ever doing actual Sequential pages, let alone a massive future Tokyo cityscape, so yeah. There are tons of errors in these panels, many of which I didn't have time to fix, but now I know for next time (especially after seeing the actual comic pages). Also, I had the choice whether to do a city scape or a MASSIVE 30-FT TALL SAMURAI WAR DROID ERUPTING OUT OF THE FLOOR needless to say I was very sad because they figured the city would be more of a challenge for me :[

Big character reveal- which happens to be my fav page, this also took forever, and he's not quite standing on that floor, but boy was drawing all those bodies both daunting and fun. My prof liked this page as well (one of my classmates actually noticed the slumped [albeit small] body in the b/g over the couch). Good times. Yay for blood covering up perspective lines I don't wish to draw/figure out! :D

"Oh noes stereotypically named Japanese man, please don't kill me!" Hahaha I hate this page, that levitation sequence was painful to do. The class didn't really like Leinel's interpretation of it either, although that could have been only to make me feel a bit better about the SUCK

Prof like the emotion in panel 4 which made me happy. Up and down extreme perspective=not easy

Oops

...I haven't updated for a while. Shame on me! Well because of my lack of updating I have a great wealth of art done over the past 3 weeks, so it's a fun time for everyone.

On an awesome note, I had an interview with the amazingly talented and famous illustrator Jon Foster!! Go check out his amazing work! It was an honor and a privilege to be able to speak with such an insightful and down-to-earth person, and he gave a lot of useful advice about entering the field of illustration and make sure doing what you love is truly what you love to do. I would post it, but I don't know if I am allowed to.

In other news, here are like the half-million (yeah right) projects I finished over these weeks:

1. The In Character Magazine cover

This didn't turn out as well as could be with all the hype that was attached to it. My professor seemed to like it a lot, which is good, but as with everything, I could have done better. Playing with the colors was fun. It was better as a stand-alone without the text added, but you know:

2. Backlit Watercolor


This one should have turned out so much better than it did. That is all.

3. Gouache Secrets

We had to illustrate either secrets or Noah's Ark in gouache, and of course me being me, I choose the secrets. Here's the comp:

I liked this one much better than the watercolor, but I still got the same kinds of marks on it as with the previous, and no one said anything about it, like at all, during critique, which was really frustrating because I would, you know, like to improve. I was happy I was able to use the color yellow in a much more desirable way than I imagine the color yellow would be used by me. It was a lot of fun to paint, especially the fabric!

4. Character Design for Sequential Art

This was enjoyable, that is all. She is a female inventor in the Victorian Era, who works as a seamstress by day and sneaks off to try to uphold her father's legacy by inventing things people couldn't even imagine back in those times. She has to fight hard to hide this from her mother and successfully create something without blowing it up (which explains her partial bustle). She sewed those pants herself.

Sidewalk Arts!!

Hoo boy,

If today was a turkey, it would be stuffed with all manner of excitement and the most delicious foods one would ever imagine. I got to beat out another girl in a serious match of rock-paper-scissors to spend the whole day with Ed Murrieta, senior creative director of Cartoon Network!!! It was fantastic. He's so fun and down-to-earth, and an all-around nice guy. I also got to meet his wonderful family as well (his grandson is the cutest thing ever). We walked around for judging of the works of Sidewalk Arts, many beautiful entries there, and it looked like so much fun. I'm definitely taking part in it next year if the opportunity doesn't arise for me to volunteer with another awesome guest judge (or maybe it'll be Ed again!). He told me to go with the fun people anyway, mayhaps I'll do just that.

Ooh, I also got him to draw in my sketchbook, but I should prolly make sure he's okay with me posting it before I do....I'll just upload a low-res scan of it for now.

I also drew a bit in my brand-new sketchbook yesterday.

And this painting is one in progress that I should be working on now, and that I'll be working on probably all the rest of this weekend.

Hell Week

My goodness, was this week stressful. But productive! Huge image dump right here...it's what I was working on this week. I would scan my SEQA stuff, but I already handed in half my sketchbook.

I changed my idea like I always do for my backlit watercolor assignment. Here's the old idea:

This panel for Drawing for SEQA took forever and there's still a crapload of things wrong with it, but I worked really hard on it so I still want to share.
I'm just not cut out for comic books; it's a really good thing I didn't switch my major!

This little enjoyable piece will be for my roomate's birthday when I'm finished with it. It's also used on my business card.
